Zwelibanzi Zwane, Milky, Inkjet print on archival cotton rag art paper, 44.5 x 29.6 cm, 2023
Born in Johannesburg in 2000. Lives and works in Alberton, South Africa.
Ukuthula—meaning « peace » in the artist’s home language—explores the weight of vulnerability in a world often dominated by chaos and noise. Rooted in the artist’s upbringing in the Deep South, where violence and survival shaped his early years, this body of work delves into the struggle of navigating one’s sensitivity in a harsh environment.
Through intimate imagery, Ukuthula reconnects with the artist’s younger self—a version of him caught in a world that demanded emotional restraint, a world where gentleness felt like a foreign language. In this work, the artist confronts the lasting emotional impact of that time, while seeking a place of refuge, peace, and emotional release.
This body of work is a meditation on reclaiming emotional space, offering a reflection on the quiet desire for sanctuary, away from the pressure of the outside world. Ukuthula calls for an honest confrontation with vulnerability—a place where one can simply exist, breathe, and rest. It invites the viewer to explore their own emotional landscapes, to question the spaces where they too might find peace.
